As the caption says, Not impressed. Would not recommend this if you like the "Normal" Cohen style. Will keep trying in the hope that it grows on me.
Release Date November 15, 2004
The reason why a compilation like this is useful is that not everyone's a music nut. Not everyone absolutely loves Neil Young. I have the 2CD Decade compilation and I find it be no fun trying to get through it. This is ideal as it's very much to the point without too many boring songs. It also has a fair chunck of his most popular album Harvest. Decade can now be put in a drawer and forgotten.

On 25 October, 2004, legendary DJ John Peel passed away. Perhaps I was too young to appreciate his impact and the sheer passion for music he possessed, but, nonetheless, I have many memories of listening to his show at night, absorbing the many strange and out of step songs played, usually at the wrong speed. That same date in 2004 was my first gig; Franz Ferdinand at the Manchester Apollo. Their impromptu cover of 'Teenage Kicks' in memory of John Peel is legendary in my mind and will always stick with me. The memories of that night will forever be tied to this album and that's why, for me at least, it is still worth listening to.

Ronan is such a sweet entertainer, definatly one for the housewifes and grannies who yearn for the good old days of royal variety performances, but don't worry you boy band loving people, Our ronan is going for gold and going (eventually) for Daniel o donnels crown, who's music is as starched as his suites. I actually admire ronan's career, following in the oposite footsteps of U2 he's actually found a bland niche concerning music and the people who listen to him and boy bands alike.

I was fortunate enough to see Bassekou and his Ngoni Ba live and I spent the entire concert with a big grin on my face (I couldn't help it). The exuberance, style and sheer fun of them playing together also comes across on the album. If,like me, you don't know much about African music but want a great place to start you may just have found it. The problem will be finding something as good to follow it

This album hugely disappointed me. Mark Knopfler is my idol - the reason I ever picked up a guitar and tried to play it. He is, and will always be, a genius with a six string. I love and listen to "Sailing To Philadelphia" over and over again, and there are some cracking tracks on "Shangri-la" as well.
But this album is not anything like what I expected. I would put forward that "The Scaffolder's Wife" is the only one with a bit of oomph to it. I have to agree with the other reviewers who call it dull and tuneless. Mark appears as a bit part player in the whole recording, seemingly concentrating more on the production side than the musical contribution side. Memorable riffs are, sadly, almost non-existent. This is a true "Folk" album, but not ... Read More:

I didn't have great expectations of this album when I initially ordered it, given that there are a fair few albums focused on West African music from the seventies and they are of distinctly varying quality, in my experience. Fortunately on its arrival I was pleasantly surprised to find a double album that was beautifully put together in terms of packaging and one of the most interesting and informative accompanying booklets I have seen for a while. The music was pretty good too.
Essentially this is a compilation of rare tracks that the compiler felt were worth trying to bring to a wider audience. Predominantly it explores the highlife scene of early 1970's Nigeria but without being exclusive. Furthermore, thanks to the excellent sleeve notes, ... Read More:

Driving home one day last Autumn the song 'Roots', featured on this album, was played on a radio 4 show and the hairs flew up on the back of my neck! The song is a great thumping polemic on the loss of our english identity and our stories and songs - our roots, something very close to my heart. It is not a jingoistic nationalist rant but it does question, forcibly, why we are so happy to accept plastic massed produced entertainment instead of looking toward our own rich culture. Anyway, I pre-ordered the album when I got home on the strength of that one track and it has hardly left the cd player since. The diversity and skill of the music and lyrics are extraordinary and I just couldn't recommend it enough. Brilliant musicianship, brilliant storytelling. Thanks.
