I bought Five Leaves Left after a chance encounter with 'Cello Song in 2004. Like everything by this man, it is a great song but the least of what I found on this wonderful album. My first impression was that Nick had a similar vocal style to Colin Blunstone, but after listening to the complete album I concluded that neither Nick's vocal style or his music owed anything to anybody. The music is essentially accoustic based ballads, if you can call these songs ballads; they are slow and beautiful yes, but filled with the lost chord of another existence entirely.
This was his debut album, yet it presents an artist at the height of his powers. Words like enchanting or mesmerizing only partly tell the story. When I listen to ... Read More:

Yet another album that I can play over and over again without it getting boring. I know all of the songs by heart and yet I can listen to it any time. There is only one artist (and I can only emphasize the word ARTIST) who can do this, LEONARD COHEN. Without a doubt, his version of the traditional song LEAVING GREEN SLEEVES is the absolute highlight on this disc.

Is this the greatest album of all time? Truthfully, I don't know. At the tender age of 18, I thought so. I had no concept of Van Morrison except for Dexy's great cover of Jackie Wilson Said. So, I got on the train to Chester, because they had Penny Lane Records, and I knew I'd find it there. I bought it together with St. Domininc's Preview, so that if I didn't dig Astral Weeks I'd have the album with JWS on and all would not be lost. From the floating, opening strains of the title track, I was immediately hooked. I had never heard anything so fresh, so free, and I already loved Dylan and The Beatles and - for good measure - Scott Walker, but nothing matched this, until I later discovered the likes of Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Neil Young, etc. But it has to ... I've always loved the Bachelors and grew up listening to their music, dad was always playing them...of course I had a crush on them, after all they were two great looking blokes from Ireland with superb voices.
It's a great CD with all my favourite songs and makes for wonderful lazy Sunday morning listening. Just to sing along with none of the hissing and static that used to go with vinal records is a bonus as well.
If you are a fan of the Bachelors then buy this CD I can promise you won't be disappointed. Just listening to Marta...wonderful,hmmmm!!, happy memories.

This is a great record of undefinable trips into blues and folk with a jazz vibe at times.
Great guitar playing, great singing, great songs and an almost mesmerising laid back atmosphere.
Nothing else I have heard by John Martyn touches this.
I love to hear a record where a musician so clearly says "this is my sound, and it isn't like anyone else"
He shies away from the "hey nonny nonny" of Pentangle etc and produces a genre-defying piece of brilliance which could sit equally in the folk or blues camps.
This is great music - it just remains for you to buy it immediately at this bargain price.

Some great tracks with echoes of the 60's in some of the stripped down versions. It gives you an insight into how Bob is influenced by others and fits in well to his account in Cronicles. This is the best Dylan material that has been released for a long time. You can enjoy it new to Bob or old like me!
Release Date April 03, 2006
Some real gems here. Granted some of the tracks have been released on other compilation records (namely Gilles Peterson's; indeed Forge used to DJ with Gilles back in the eighties; check out their excellent Dingwalls record) but that's because the songs are excellent. There's a nice mix of funk, jazz, folk and soul here that is sure to make your average party goer stand up, take notice, and applaud your unique and well flavoured musical taste.

Much of this album serves for me as a testimony to the wonderful drumming of Martin Lamble, that feathery touch and those rolls, often playing underneath the music, or just riding the beat. There was something shimmering (and almost held-back) in the music of their live gigs, with the texture lying between the drums and the bass playing. Lamble was an extraordinary player for a 19 year old. This album is also a melancholy listen: I still remember hearing them shortly afterwards with Dave Mattacks's embarassing drumming, and the music suddenly sounded so crude and so unlovely.

Whilst I broadly agree with the other reviews, I must say that I don't think this is the highlight of Sandy's post Fairport career. Sandy's compositions and vocal style continued to get more varied and interesting, and also her post Fotheringay albums are sung entirely by her which is all to the good.
This album is held back by Trevor's performances (although i actually don't mind The Ballad of Ned Kelly, which is one of Trevors best songs.) when what one longs for is to finally hear Sandy writing and performing a whole album without compromises.
The Sandy penned songs and the traditional Banks of the Nile are naturally the standout tracks here: for one can't see how anyone in their right mind would thing Trevors Gordon Lightfoot cover would be the best thing here- that ... Read More:
