'Rust Never Sleeps' is an intriguing, odd and at times excellent album with songs which must rank among Neil Young's finest. The album was recorded on the road during the 'Comes A Time' 1978 tour and it's a half acoustic, half electric affair. The majority of the tracks were either recorded in one take or live in concert but because the audience is omitted during the mix the album isn't 'live' but yearns to be.You will need to purchase the excellent 'Live Rust' to appreciate the actual tour concerts and includes four of the nine songs here.
'Rust Never Sleeps' however does contain some of Neil Young's strongest compositions. It begins with the acoustic 'My My Hey Hey' which is aimed at the music industry and 'Pocahontas' is one of Young's finest ... Read More:

I'm a massive Steeleye Fan and enjoy nothing more than listening to their finest tracks. Generally, with a compilation like this, you can never be sure if you'll end up loving everything and this is by no means an exception. However; the less good tracks on the CD are very few! "To Know Him is To Love Him" for instance is probably the least enjoyable (let's face it; it's just not Steeleye Span like they should be) and "Now we Are Six" is very much an acquired taste. Nevertheless, there are a great number of less famous gems, such as "Royal Forester" and "Dark Eyed Sailor". "Saucy Sailor", "Thomas the Rhymer" and "Drink Down the Moon" are again well worth a real listen, and help make this one of the best Span compilations ever!

I'm new to this genre and I have got into Miranda Lambert and Gretchen Wilson and although I don't buy his political persuasion, Toby Keith.
I bought West and wasn't impressed but Car Wheels is something else. Maybe because I'm new to this brand of music I'm suckered but I really think that this is such a stand out CD that it merits huge praise. I've heard that it was a perfectionist effort - hence the Pet Sounds analogy - and if so it works. Right in Time and Joy -two very different pices are addictive. Maybe this is a one-off in which case play it to death.

Had this album on vinyl years ago, and recently bought the digitally remastered CD. Wow! It's even better than my most golden memories of it! I had forgotten just how good a singer Joni Mitchell was/is. Most of these songs are just Joni with her guitar. One of them - 'The Fiddle and the Drum' - is just Joni without even her guitar. But these are not simple three chord strumalong songs. In spite of tending towards the sparse and austere, they are also quite complex. There are unconventional guitar tunings, chord progressions and key changes that keep these songs fresh, however often I listen to them.
Then there is the Joni Mitchell voice. She really has been one of the best singers of the late 20th century in any genre. (Is that a bit over the top? ... Read More:

Black Sunday made Cypress Hill's connection to rock & roll more explicit, with its heavy metal-like artwork and noisier, more dissonant samples (including, naturally, stoner icons Black Sabbath). It's a slightly darker affair than its groundbreaking predecessor, with the threats of violence more urgent and the pot obsession played to the hilt (after all, it was a crucial part of their widespread appeal). Apart from those subtle distinctions, the sound of Black Sunday is pretty much the same as Cypress Hill, refining the group's innovations into an accessible bid for crossover success. In fact, it's a little startling how often Black Sunday recycles musical ideas and even lyrical catch phrases from the endlessly inventive debut. And the rock-derived, verse-chorus song structures ... Read More:

Having been bored of general student genres of music entering my second year (september2006) a friend suggested that i listen to gogol bordello. Having accumulated an ipod full of samey dnb and hiphop i needed something interesting and catchy to perhaps overt my musical attention to something a bit more alternative. URRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!Simply stunning, from the moment i started listening to 'Sally' i was bowled over! The originality of the instrumental mixed with the raw and unique vocals of Hutz was simply incredible. 3 months after having first listened to underdog world strike Gogol came and played moscow where i was studying at the time. To say that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up in this chic, underground cellar style venue when gogol smashed start wearing purple is ... Read More:

Crooked Still have produced two excellent CDs of bluegrass with a twist - the twist being the interplay between four instruments in which the cello plays an unorthodox but brillient part (think bluegrass crossed with the best type of chamber music playing). Here they add an additional fiddle player, which although in theory should add to the overall range of their sound, to my ear actually takes away some of the drive and energy that they achieved previously and was the standout quality of their work. There are some good tracks here, but nothing quite up to the best of their previous work. Still just about worth four stars, but not quite up to the high expectations set by the previous two CDs.

On 25 October, 2004, legendary DJ John Peel passed away. Perhaps I was too young to appreciate his impact and the sheer passion for music he possessed, but, nonetheless, I have many memories of listening to his show at night, absorbing the many strange and out of step songs played, usually at the wrong speed. That same date in 2004 was my first gig; Franz Ferdinand at the Manchester Apollo. Their impromptu cover of 'Teenage Kicks' in memory of John Peel is legendary in my mind and will always stick with me. The memories of that night will forever be tied to this album and that's why, for me at least, it is still worth listening to.
