Even though i was born twenty years after this was made, it defined an era for me, roughly from the ages of 19 to 23 (he wasnt much older when he made this), that age when you just finish with being a teenager and start trying to be less flippant, for most anyway, for me it was the time for first relationships, i was a late starter. But this album was me, mine, it is for me, still is. While others my age were listening to Tatu and Sclub and prodigy, i'd found Bob.

Tracks that stand out - Subterranean Homesick Blues. Maggie's Farm. Mr Tambourine man. It's Alright Ma. She Belongs to Me (One of my favourite songs). Gates Of Eden. Love Minus Zero.

Achtung Baby

Many U2 fans and reviewers here seem to think that Achtung Baby is their best album. I disagree. Actually I think it is one of their dullest. Apart from the fabulous "One", "Ultraviolet" and "Love is Blindness", the other songs are fairly bland. You could pretty much swap music or lyrics between any of them and not notice the difference. "Zooropa" has more energy and range in this genre, and all their early albums are miles better. I'd even say "Pop" has a better mix of material. I don't know why but, apart from the three songs mentioned, this album fails to move me - unlike most of U2'sother albums.

I was persuaded by previous reviews to buy this set. It is literally monotonous - a nice-ish voice but all on one note. There is no depth or colour to it and the only emotion it demonstrates is depression. Also the arrangements are plodding and overblown. That s right, I really didn t like it.

I think this was my first Leonard Cohen album, or at least the one that made Cohen my favorite artist (-> ARTIST!). It's songs like "THE WINDOW", "THE GUESTS", "BALLAD OF AN ABSENT MARE" or "UN CANADIEN ERRANT", which have so much to say, rather than raving about cheap sex and kills as in rap and hip hop songs of today. Cohen doesn't need base, drums or an orchestral overkill to make GREAT music.

Some influential voices will be dismayed, even horrified, by this combination of Issa Bagayogo's authentic, man-from-the-country sound and a series of propulsive rhythm tracks made from programmed beats and keyboards. I stand with the choir on the other side of the room, to sing the praises of an impressive and consistently enjoyable album from yet another marvellous and unique artist from Mali. How do you say 'it gets better with every play' without it sounding like a cliche? I give up.

Perhaps the closest parallel is to Amadou & Mariam's 2005 album, produced by Manu Chao, although the productions of Willie Mitchell in the early Seventies also come to mind - it's intriguing to imagine Al Green or Ann Peebles slipping into some of these arrangements. ... Read More:

Absolutely brilliant effort from Fish. Been a fan since Marillion days and I have to admit I think this album is one of the best I have ever heard. 'Arc of the Curve' is something else, whilst 'Square Go' gets you going big style. Having seen Fish perform live in my home town of Elgin on a couple of occasions, this album has all the guttso to blow you away in a live setting.

I have a fairly broad music taste ....including a bit of folk.. Fairport, Richard Thompson, Nic Jones, Martin Carthy...and this album by Martin Simpson is amongst the best I've ever heard. There is no doubt that he is technically brilliant ....but it is the emotion and warmth of his playing and the combination of arrangements of traditionalsongs and original material that really makes this album different. 'Mother Love' is so simple and beautiful, and 'Never Any Good' (see Cambridge Folk Festival video) has a wonderfully told story. A real problem with many folk artists trying to write their own contemporary material is lyrics that dont work - there are no such doubts with Martin Simpson. I love the Pogues but there's a reason most of this stuff was never released. There's a few great tracks on here but I doubt I'll listen to most of it ever again. This is certainly for fans only.
