This is great! There is not ONE song that isn't worth five stars. I have loved Van Morrison's music since the 60's & this compilation shows just how great a writer & performer he is. He might be a bit of a miserable sod most of the time, but I wasn't inviting him for dinner so that isn't a problem. Add this to your CD collection. You will love it.

Burlesque

I was really looking forward to hearing the first Bellowhead album in its entirety. A great live band who had built up a cult following and brought on board critics such as Mr Folk, Mike Harding and the music critics from the 'serious' newspapers.
Bellowhead could be seen as an English Pogues. Quirky and left field. Offering their own unique interpretations of traditional songs through their all singing all dancing 11 piece instrumental line up.
Mixing everything from folk,to rag time,vaudeville,trad jazz and roots, the Bellowhead sound is certainly unique.
Unfortunately for me,their strength is in their live performances. Burlesque is quite a way off mark in that it lacks any outstanding tracks and loses so much in its over ... Read More:

This is where I started with Richard Thompson: possibly not the best of ideas, because this album is simply flawless and nothing else can realistically compare!

If you come into this album thinking that folk music is all about people is Aran sweaters with their finger in their ear, you're in for a rude awakening. Yes, OK, so "When I Get To The Border" and "We Sing Hallelujah" have clearly strong folk influences, but songs like "The Calvary Cross" and "I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight" wear their rock-heart on their sleeve - the latter has a particularly fine groove going on (or something).

My own personal favourite is "Withered And Died", with a heartbreaking vocal performance from Linda, and some very sharp lyrics. An ... Read More:

I think there is alittle bit of hysteria about this album. I think the importance of the album lies in the fact that it opened the flood gates for Cuban music in general rather than to the individual merits of the album itself. Since its release there has been renewed interest in Cuban music and it has revitalised the careers of many of those involved in the project. But the album itself? Well, it's good, but not great! The album is pedestrian. I can't help thinking that Ry Cooder was at the mercy of time and just couldn't get the album to sound the way he wanted it to. Compared to other Cuban albums I have heard, and own, this one ranks lower.

The Punch Bowl

Having come to the brilliant Seth Lakeman through his Mercury nominated 'Kitty Jay' and the follow up 'Freedom Fields' and having seen an electrifying live performance at Liverpool's Academy. I had procrastinated about getting Seth's first album which appears to have been lost from critical evaluation on the Amazon pages. I presumed that perhaps a younger Seth had been a 'finger in yer ear' Martin Carthy traditionalist and The Punch Bowl was full of earnest but dull renditions of sea shanties and songs about maiden's losing their....thingymagig.
In truth, The Punch Bowl is a pure Seth Lakeman album full of catchy riffs,wailing fiddles and those emotive vocals. With Cara Dillon providing sweet backing vocals and the rest of the Lakeman clan rustling up the instrumental ... Read More:

Just thought I'd do my bit to reduce the ludicrously high star rating of Mr. Rice's dreary and vacuous disc. Lisa Hannigan does well to provide a good contrast to his dreadful vocals, but 'Cold Water' is the only song here of any merit; the rest is over-hyped tosh of the worst kind. May he sink into deserved obscurity as soon as possible.

In Search of Sunrise Vol.7: Asia/Mixed By Tiesto

I don't like every song on this album. Infact, I can probably say this for #7 more so than #5 or #6 (I don't own #1-#4). However, I have nothing but admiration for the way Tiesto mixes the songs, as I have mentioned on previos ISoS albums. This is no exception - the choice of songs, and the order on which they appear is just true brilliance, in my opinion.
In short, cd01 is more vocal, 'housey,' and could be classed as cheesy, even though using the phrase 'cheesy' is cheesier than any music can be. I don't think it is, there are some good songs here that really do allow you to drift away with the sunshine and the associated connotations of a beach party, etc.
Cd02 is very much more progressive and trancey, partiuclarly at the end. This suits me better due ... Read More:

Some real gems here. Granted some of the tracks have been released on other compilation records (namely Gilles Peterson's; indeed Forge used to DJ with Gilles back in the eighties; check out their excellent Dingwalls record) but that's because the songs are excellent. There's a nice mix of funk, jazz, folk and soul here that is sure to make your average party goer stand up, take notice, and applaud your unique and well flavoured musical taste.
