Ludwig Minkus isn't really lucky on disc. As one of the most productive ballet music composers of the 19th century, good recordings of his work are next to non existent. The great theatre orchestras like the Kirov-Mariinsky in St. Petersburg or the Bolshoi in Moscow, who still play this repertory regularly and know it backwards, have never released a Minkus CD � one assumes for reasons of commercial viability. Instead we get hideosities like the CD considered. For some obscure reason the Sofia National Opera Orchestra has recorded Minkus' "Don Quixote" (a ballet from Marius Petipa dating from 1869 and still performed by theatres around the world) for the second time in less than ten years.
