Editorial Review: From Amazon.com: Lionel Bart's wonderful musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic was the first London stage musical to be transplanted to Broadway with the same kind of sensation it received in Britain-- something that is now common in these post-Cats/Les Miserables times. Although no one from this British cast ever became enormously famous (future Monkee Davy Jones was in the second Broadway cast)--and Sir Carol Reed's film version receives all the critical accolades--this remains the better recording, featuring all the songs cut from the film, while excluding the film's musical interludes that simply seem annoying without the visuals. Just compare Bruce Brochnik to the film's Mark Lester in the title role. Or Clive Revill to Ron Moody's Fagin.  Rating:  - Stars deducted for parts deductedOkay, this is a bit churlish, because it deserves a 5, but there are huge cuts from Oom Pah Pah, I think 2 verses missing - for political correctness? Not for space/length reasons as there are 200 dance choruses of Who Will Buy and Consider Yourself. I like the Shani Wallis songs the best, so to have big chunks taken out of one of her best songs is a real spoiler. Elsewhere, the mixing is a little off. When you listen to Fine Life, it's like one giant unknown cockney is standing 2 inches away from your ear bellowing 'FINE LIFE!' during the choruses. Rating:  - Great songs, great singers, great value.I bought this to take on holiday with us. We sang along to it for hours. Rating: - A good soundtrackI've always loved the film Oliver! especially singing along with the musical numbers in the film. So recently I purchased the CD soundtrack. I already love the songs so there's no issue there but the songs are cut from what is heard in the film. This disapointed me which is why i've only given it three stars. Rating: - Musically superb.There are few musicals with so many great numbers as Oliver!: 'Consider Yourself'; 'You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two'; 'As Long As He Needs Me'; 'Reviewing the Situation'....the list just goes on and on. Lionel Bart never wrote a better musical (and I'm not sure anyone else did). It's now an incredible bargain at Amazon's current price of under £3-00. Some people prefer the stage recording (there are some odd balances in this, the film recording, but they don't detract from the pleasure) ; but for sheer joy and wonderful orchestral arrangements, you should snap this up. Terrific. Rating: - The film - on diskOliver! is one of those shows which has become well known through the film. Although the stage show has a few extra songs, Carol Reid's cinema version is a faithful adaptation which delivers spectacle aplenty, and has served as the definitive cinema musical for many others. The recording is faithful, but adds nothing to the film itself, and suffers from a weak lead that cannot be lifted when the visuals are removed. I would recommend the London Revival above this recording, but film fans may well enjoy this version. |
