I'm not really sure how to react when I listen to this CD; somehow it falls between the Marsalis' concept of jazz (quite acceptable to me) and Monk's quirky wit (even more acceptable to me)...
It would be silly to demand a Monk album from these interpretations, but Marsalis and company, although swinging nicely, haven't really delivered everything the modern jazz giant Wynton Marsalis is capable of...

This is a very mysterious CD. Thelonious Monk is a revered jazz musician and composer, he is an influence of gigantic proportions, The Rough Guide to Jazz recommends this album but for all that, somehow, I cannot bring myself to like it. Perhaps it is too intellectual for me, I like my music to swing and this does not and yet most of the personnel can and do swing on other recordings.
The strangest thing of all is I have to keep listening to it and perhaps in an odd way I am coming to appreciate it. Is it possible to appreciate music without enjoying it? Could it be that appreciation, understanding and enjoyment follow one another? I hope so because these are top jazz musicians playing music I don't really understand but I feel in ... Read More:

Indeed. A better arranger (Monk himself, for instance) would be better for this job than Oliver Nelson. However, this is not so bad - Monk's solo spots seem even more ironical in this context and there's also a solo number which is brilliant in itself, although it breaks down the concept of the album and underlines the shortcommings of other tracks...
Since Nelson's arrangements are a mixed blessing, this album is a mixed bag...
