Stiff set up to show the corporates how it was done and survived more on luck than good management.I just watched the TV documentary though it ended with the Pogues and no mention of the fact the label was revived recently because it had been acquired by Warner Brothers! Yes one of the corporates who would never have signed shambolic stuff like Wreckless Eric or plain Godawful crap like the Plasmatics.
I mean Warner Brothers had the Sire label and all the Indie stuff came from their Why Fi imprint-then went bankrupt after the Virginia Astley hit so returned to Sire.
Looking at it today you ask yourself "would YOU have signed some of these acts?".You just have to be thankful they DID as Elvis Costello may have struggled with EMI. ... Read More:

There are some decent tracks on here buried amongst the oft-repeated tat selection also included. My main complaint is that this selection has absolutely nothing to do with 'New Wave' post punk. If you want to find an excellent compilation of 'new wave' bands see if you can dig out the now deleted 'Once in a lifetime' double disc set.
Why record companies want to put out such a selection of this, which just throws in all types of odds and sods from the 80's with no real focus, is beyond me really......

I can't believe the reviewer (Debbie) who says she didn't know most of these tracks! If she was there in the 1980s, she must have had ear plugs in and a paper bag over her head! This album is a great compilation at a bargain price - fantastic for listening to in the car, or quizzing your mates (who was that?), or demonstrating your vast knowledge of 1980s pop trivia. For the discerning listener, this series of albums prompts wider research into some of these artists - the excellent Blancmange, for example, and whatever happened to Kon Kan?
At less than £1 per disc, this is amazing value. For those who weren't there it provides a pretty good overview of what was happening in that decade.

Lost you precious '80's vinyls? This compilation will have all your favourites and ones you forgot. The first album was great and although this has similar artists this does not detract from the fact it is pure new romantic fun. Lets not get serious guys - after all we all looked pretty daft in that decade (I'll never forget the boys in class discussing the best way to apply makeup in an effort to look like a favourite (male) singer!). If you want some serious electro pop pleasure, forget meeting a bunch of 30 plus somethings in the boozer, dig out your baggies, spin this disc and DaDaDa the night away - Ich licht du nicht, du licht micht nicht.

This is probably one of the best compilations of late 70s and 80s synth hits. It doesn't tell the whole story of synth pop though, as obscure artists like The Normal and Klaus Nomi are omitted. Besides this minor gripe, it does offer a brilliant overview of the synth sound of the late 1970s and of the 1980s with all the major artists and most of the classic hits represented.
Disc One contains The Human League's gloomy early track Being Boiled plus their later devastating pop hit Don't You Want Me, Tubeway Army's seminal 1978 hit Are Friends Electric, David Bowie's funky Fashion, Thomas Dolby's quirky Hyperactive, Soft Cell's decadent Say Hello Wave Goodbye and the pioneering Kraftwerk's hypnotic The Model. One serious omission is Eurythmics’ ... Read More:
