Mercadante: Orazi e CuriaziSearch: Camilla from: Opera Rara Release Date March 01, 1999 Apparently Patric Schmidt waited years to record this opera and it's not hard to understand why - the role of Camilla is a killer. The opera is a sort of Roman Romeo & Juliet, love verses duty tale and one of Mercadante's most ambitious works. The material obviously calls Bellini's Norma to mind, and the ceremonial scenes and moments of high bel canto drama are indeed developed from that heritage. But as so often with this composer one can look forward to Verdi as well, even as far as Aida, with it's simular themes and great choral moments. It's hard to imagine it better done than here, and as usual with opera Rara this is a real class act, with superb documentation, and a full edition of the score, with an appendix ... Read More: |
