While preparing for 'Peter and the Wolf' Sting listened to some earlier recordings and monitored the reactions of his own children to the different interpretations. He decided to record a version in which the only character who speaks with his (Sting's) natural voice is Peter. Claudio Abbado helped him to create the other accents. The resulting narration is enthusiastic and charasmatic but never too contrived.
The extras on the disc are a real joy too. The delightful little upbeat march in B flat major (op.99) is for me two and a half minutes of pure bliss. The 'Overture on Hebrew Themes' is a beautiful reading and the 'Classical Symphony' is the best reading I've ever heard. I would purchase this disc for this performance of the Classical ...
