I've been a Depeche Mode fan for years, and i've been with them through their highs and lows - from the fun simple piano sounds they introduced during the early 80's, to their unfortunate drug influenced era during the 90's. So in may ways, it makes perfect sense that their album Black Celebration should be their best.
A blend of character, fantastic mixing in some cases, and song order makes this the classic album thats ideal to listen to at night. Indeed, this is one 'black' celebration, as it doesn't house the bright sounds of their very singles album (81-85), but instead, foucses much more on Martin Gore's passion for songs of devotion, and wonder. If you're fairly new to DM, perhaps you've just bought Exciter, after the Greatest Hits packages - this is where to go next. Recorded at the last night of a mega world tour - this was the 101st gig, hence the title - 101 catches Depeche Mode at their mind-boggling best. All the 80s classics are here along with a couple of gems only available on the old albums. Side 4 in particular will just blow you away. The album opens with Pimpf which is basically just there to make sure you're listening, then the big stuff comes in with all guns blazing. Behind The Wheel gets the crowd, and you, just in the right frame of mind for Strangelove and by the time the last chords of Something To Do fade away you, and the audience, are putty in Dave Gahan's hands. What a challenge it must have been to the recording engineers when they were asked to capture a defining moment in the rise of Depeche Mode stateside.The culmination of a gruelling tour of the United States at the 60,000 seat Pasadena Rose Bowl.Even those of us with just a cursory knowledge of audio technology would do well to avoid making a recording in an open air stadium.Your environment is against you from the word go.Not only do you have the problem of sound bouncing off the seating stands,you also lose a large amount of audio signal to the very air around you.Also add to that the problem of recording a band that at this point in their career were very technology/electronic reliant.A format that does not lend its self to ambiance or atmosphere!
