For one of the best live bands in the world ever, to release a live album that is little more than pristine live versions of studio tracks with a few odds and sods and curios thrown in for good measure is a crying shame. One star for Sweet Dream and Roots to Branches. The versions of the other classics are so pedestrian its unbelievable. What this fan really wants is some not studio perfect recordings from the mid seventies when Tull were at their peak. ELP set the example with the Manticore Vaults. Think about it.

"Aqualung" is certainly the rawest of Jethro Tull's albums, as far from the artistic pretensions of "Thick as a Brick" and "Passion Play" as you can get in terms of their albums. This might have something to do with the album's mission statement, which is printed in old fashioned type on the linear notes: "In the beginning Man created God; and in the image of Man created he him....But as all these things did come to pass, the Spirit that did cause man to create his God lived on with all men: even within Aqualung. And man saw it not. But for Christ's sake he'd better start looking." Ironically, this is one of the few Jethro Tull albums where the lyrics are not printed despite the fact this is arguably the album where the lyrics mattereth the most.

I just saw this concert recently. Much more intimate than the concerts of the 70's (no, really?) and the minstrel in the gallery is 58 and straining his vocal cords, but we love him anyway! The first set was mostly acoustic with many interesting song choices (Weathercock, Nothing is Easy, Skating Away, Mother Goose & Cheap Day Return, etc.) and played with a cool, upfront "remember these?" charm (Ian started the night pissed at the auditorium management so he boiled up some piss & vinegar for the show, which is a good thing I think). The second set also rocked but more in the Aqualung style we all know and love. Martin, ever the pro, let loose the Marshall stack (with Soldano tube heads) attack on extremely receptive TULL fan eardrums, treating the crowd ... Read More:

I could not disagree more strongly with the previous reviewer. Anderson has led Tull for years with edgy rock using contrast and texture to great effect. This effort is bland in the extreme, excellent musicianship but devoid of excitement and really does nothing to enhance existing versions of the various songs. This lot needs to be filed with the pointless reworkings included on the Christmas album.
I am thinking of building a lift on the side of my house and putting this album on permament rotation as elevator music, because thats what it is.
