This record is phenomenal. I am a jazz fan, but reckon it is pretty accessible for the non-jazz type as a good introduction to what your missing.
The album has a sense of frivolity about it, as do most of Serge's, but this does not detract at all from the quality of the music. It is also not made frivolous to hide inadequacies elsewhere.
Comparisons: certainly bears more than a few similarities to Matthew Herbert's Big Band album, although Serge does it much better. If you like Stan Getz/Astrud Gilberto, you'll probably like this. I'd say it also has a subtle latin edge to it, so if that floats your boat...
My only regret is that I didn't find out about this album earlier.

An engaging introduction into the compelling music of the man who, in his own lifetime, was regarded as a French national institution: Serge Gainsbourg. This compilation provides a broad and chronological overview of his career; it begins in 1958 with the jazzy strains of 'Le Poinconneur Des Lillas and concludes, 22 tracks and 32 years later, with his gentle, unhurried duet with Catherine Deneuve 'Dieu Fumeur De Havanes' from 1980. Crammed in between are three decades worth of tracks in a multitude of musical styles, including: pop, jazz, rock, reggae and disco. Initials SG shows that Gainsbourg, at his best, had poise ('Initials BB) and passion (UK No.1 'Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus') in equal measures.

In the UK, Serge Gainsbourg is best known for his steamy duet with Jane Birkin ("je t'aime...moi non plus").
