This set is revelatory. Just listen to the famous Adagietto from the Fifth. How bloated and pretentious Bernstein sounds beside it. Only Barbirolli and Walter match the level of intensity of Solti, and his has the supreme advantage of the Chicago Symphony at its peak of perfection. I am beginning to think after listening to this, the Brahms and the Beethoven cycles, that under Solti they might well have been the finest orchestra ever, and that includes the Berlin band.

Indeed,the playing in every symphony is little short of miraculous and as for the interpretations they rescue this composer from an undeserved reputation as a self-indugent neurotic.

Gustav Mahler composed this extraordinary work in only six weeks during the summer of 1906. Standing alongside his monumental 9th Symphony which he composed the following year, it remains one of THE symphonies of the 20thC. The work is broken down into two movements; Veni, Creator Spiritus, and the closing scene Part II from Goethe's Faust. Despite two rather different movements, they both work superbly. After listening to this version since I first purchased it during the spring of 1973, I still consider it to be the best currently available. Of course, other listeners will have their own favourites, and I would imagine Klaus Tennstedt's version recorded with the London Philharmonic wouldnt be far behind as regarding performance and sound.

Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg

I have to admit that I am not an expert on Wagner, having come to fully appreciate his works only recently. I received this CD as a gift 9 months ago and have never looked back.

There are many reviews on this and other country Amazon websites about other Solti recordings, particularly his "Ring", but very little on his recording of Die Meistersinger. This is odd because this was, without question, a very worthy undertaking and deserves its place in your music cabinet.

The opera itself is, along with Tristan and Parsifal, one of the Wagner masterpieces and Solti does it every justice particularly with his precise and crisp style. The tempo in my opinion flows perfectly and the sound quality is superb. Jose van Dam and the rest of ... Read More:

The songs blend together seamlessly and you are transported on a beautiful journey of emotions through the story. Ideal for listening anytime and always guaranteed to lift your mood and make your spirits soar. A plus point is that you can switch off at any time and still feel that 15 minutes listening to this is as worthwhile as listening to the whole thing. Definately a five star CD. Enjoy!
