This set contains both of Streisands festive albums.
The first 'Christmas album' remains one of the all time classics. From the high-camp of 'jingle bells' to streisands hauntingly gorgeous 'silent night', the album is a sheer revelation from start to finish. Its a fine example of her 60's voice and intonation and remains a favourite to many fans.
the second album 'chistmas memories' came nearly 30 years after the first, but as always with streisand the wait is justified. the song selection is near perfect, and the whole work has a deeply atmospheric, almost cinematic feel. streisand takes festive standards ('i'll be home for christmas'), gorgeous ballads ('closer'), modern pop songs ('it must have been the miseltoe') and ... This is another Johnny Mathis festive offering but this time with a much mellower sounding voice. This is a lovely album but very different in style to the 1958 "Merry Christmas" album which was arranged and conducted by the late Percy Faith. Mathis was only 24 years old when he recorded "Merry Christmas" which was also his first Christmas album and for me,was also his best. The magic of the Faith arrangements and the Mathis vocals has never been surpassed.
This present CD has orchestral arrangements by Bob Krogstad, Robbie Buchanan, Ray Ellis,Alan Broadbent and Jonathon Tunick all of whom are great arrangers. The orchestra is the Irish Film Orchestra yet the liner notes indicate that the recording was made in studios in North Hollywood. ... Read More:
