Shawn's first new album since 2001, this is a respectable comeback. Having disappeared off the face of the Earth for 5 years, with only a Beatles cover on a (too sparse) retrospective as far as new material is concerned, I was worried a new album would never show up. Reading the liner-notes, it seems she's being going through a great deal of soul-searching and her worldly-wise lyrics state this quite clearly. Nevertheless, here we are, with 11 new songs plus covers of the Bee Gee's Words and Paul Westerberg's Even Here We Are. The latter is the better of the two covers, Words being recorded live and off the cuff and more along the lines of a B-side than an album closer. Album opener, and first single Fill Me Up joins Colvin's other up-tempo ... Read More:

This 2 CD set contains a fair representation of almost all of the Tangerine Dream albums recorded in the period 1973 to 1983 (the only ones missing are "Sorcerer", "Pergamon" and "Cyclone"). While it is not always the best track from each album that makes it into this set, and some are presented in bleeding chunk form only, these discs do give the listener a good overview of each album, making this a good sampler set from which to set out on an exploration of the music of Tangerine Dream's so-called Virgin Years. I don't usually approve of 'best of' collections, and usually rate them accordingly, but I'm prepared to make an exception in this case because of the completeness, variety of programming and value ... I can't decide whether Edgar Froese is basically insecure, a total perfectionist or just plain cavalier when it comes to revisiting the past achievements of Tangerine Dream. Perhaps it's a mix of all three? The "Tangents" boxed set of 5 CDs certainly demonstrates something of all of these attitudes.
The music on these disks is drawn from the period 1973-83, during which time Tangerine Dream were signed to Virgin Records. The set ignores only "Cyclone" of the 12 principal TD Virgin releases and incorporates a single passing nod to "Pergamon" (CDs 1-3). It also covers the main OST releases of the Virgin Years, "Sorcerer (1977 Film)", "Risky Business", "Thief", "Firestarter", "Wavelength" and "Flashpoint" (CD 4). The final CD presents ... Read More:

'Hyperborea' was the last album that Tangerine Dream made on the Virgin label, after a near ten year association and to be fair, lots of success.
The decision not to renew the contract must have given messrs Froese, Franke and Schmoelling a real boot up the jacksey musically, and creatively, because 'Hyperborea' is, in my opinion, the best record that this line up made for Virgin.
Opening track 'No Mans Land' is an unusual number with an Eastern flavour and a decent rhythm, it just gets a touch repetitive towards the end but kicks things off rather well.
The title track, 'Hyperborea' is next, and is by far the best track on the album. Slow burning, yet powerful, it creates an atmosphere so thick, you would need excalibur to slice ... Read More:

The I-Box is a 6 CD set that draws heavily upon tracks from the Tangents and Dream Roots box sets, which is a good thing in my opinion as they are different versions to the original albums. They have been enhanced with new synthesiser sounds, chords and melodies which will make the older material more accesible to many listeners. The set also draws heavily from the Private Music releases, with numerous tracks from Melrose, Optical Race and Lily on the Beach. Much of this material labeled "live" is very very similar to the studio releases, and whether or not you wish to believe they are really live is irrelevant because in this case they sound just like the original releases. The last disc features Dream Yards, a live performance from 1982. Those who ... Read More:

Perhaps I should have said "Most Consistant Years" of this band.
I bought this originally years ago for two tracks only - "Love On A Real Train" and "The Dream Is Always The Same". These two discs have since served well subsequently in the car.
Not sure if the mastering is from the "Definitive" work done in the nineties, or whether it's just the original that's been repackaged, but WELL WORTH IT as an introduction to their "classic" years with Virgin.
