Release Date May 27, 2002
There is nothing I can add to what has been said before.
I will admit that while I listened to radio 2 in the 70's-thanks mum & dad!- before I moved towards Joy Division & The Banshees I listened to your choice of music and I am extremely grateful for it.
"Daylight Katy" and "Sundown" are songs that stick with me now in middle-age as when I was young.
Bob Dylan was an icon for a generation but Mr Lightfoot caught my imagination when I was a nipper-listen to "If You Could Read My Mind" and tell me that Dylan wrote anything better and I would beg to differ....

Gordon Lightfoot is unbeatable at what he does. If you are new to him then Gords Gold (Vol 1) is the best introduction, but this United Artists Collection CD contains the complete tracklistings of the first four Gordon Lighfoot albums : 1966's Lightfoot, 1967's The Way I Feel , 1968 Did she mention my name, and 1968's Back here on earth, plus a version of "The first time ever I saw your face". 11 of the tracks on this CD are also on Gords Gold so for a tenner this looks like a bargain, unless you already have these albums !

The Gordon Lightfoot Songbook

Search: Circle Is Small
by: Gordon Lightfoot

Release Date October 29, 2001
Another of those singers strapped with the "new Bob Dylan", Gordon Lightfoot is a legend in his own country and I, for one, am pleased that after his illness of a couple of years ago, he is still around.

This beauty of a box set starts us off in the mid sixties with him sounding like a cross between Jim Reeves and Pat Boone (his words, taken from the very comprehensive 60 page booklet). You know what, the voice was better than both. The songs were good, too, and the first of the 4 CDs has very simple arrangements and sparse accompaniment. The songs are from his United Artists days and before he joined Warner Brothers. The other three CDs run the gamut of his excellent albums up to "A Painter Passing Through" and the 88 chosen tracks are ... Read More:

Did She Mention My Name/Back Here on Earth

Search: Circle Is Small
by: Gordon Lightfoot

Release Date January 15, 2000
This CD from Bear Family includes the third and fourth Gordon Lightfoot albums, both released in 1968 and a bonus track called Spin Spin. It's also got the lyrics so it's easily the best edition you can get!!

It is a sheer delight to listen to. Those familiar with Lightfoot's work through compilations will be familiar with Wherefore And Why and the title track on Did She Mention My Name and Bitter Green on Back Here On Earth. But anyway...

DID SHE MENTION MY NAME is a diverse album. It suffers a little from the Granny music syndrome on some cuts but the opener Wherefore And Why is a delightful rumination on hopes and possibilities, and topical issues are covered in the hard-hitting Black Day In July (about the Detroit riots of ...
