When I think of Neil Diamond and his music, this is how I like to remember him. This is absolutely superb. Not only is it littered with quality material, it also formed the bedrock of a lot of his songs that became the framework of his stunning live show on "Hot August Night", another must have.
The album is essentially split into two. The first half is a collection of some of his most inspired offerings to date. All 5 tracks are excellent. Why doesn't he play songs like "Coldwater Morning" more often - if at all? As previously mentioned in another review here, there is a wealth of material available to do an alternative show including such gems as this.
As for the second half it is a triumph. A piece of work that just ... Read More:

It may be argued that Neil Diamond has not been himself for some years now. If you don't believe me listen to these three discs (comprising all 6 of his earliest MCA studio albums) and you will be convinced of Mr Diamond's sparkling beginings. Skip the derisible "The Pot Smoker's Song" and the hokey "Knackelflerg" on Disc 1, and you are left with 69 tracks of sheer excellence. Apart from some of the classics, that all Diamond fans know and love, there are some lesser known gems - "Juliet" is a lovely, well paced love song as is "Hurtin' You Don't Come Easy" Disc 2 contains the wonderful "African Trilogy" a full sweeping mini rock opera that shows just how brave and experimental Diamond once was (and to be fair, still is in his live performances). If I could make one wish this Christmas it would be as follows: Uni / MCA (whatever you're called these days) and Sony / Columbia - please, please, please stop bringing out endless 'best of' and 'greatest hits of' Neil Diamond. These wretched compilations are absolutely useless for the simply reason that it's just not possible to squeeze the best of Neil Diamond onto a single CD. The 'best of' list is just too long. If either of these two record labels wanted to do something really useful they could remaster and reissue Neil Diamond's original albums. If you really want 'the best of' you need to get hold of the following CDs: I'm a Believer (a reissue of Classics: The Early Years, which contains most of the hits from the 'Bang' era); Play Me (a triple CD set ... Great to have this on cd at last - RB was responsible for a trio of majestic ochestrated ballads in the early 70s - the title track, Go North and Coldwater morning. All were played to death on the radio but inexplicably failed to chart. Obviously these are the highlights here but my real favourite is his superb reading of 'High Flying Electric Bird' from the 1st Pete Brown and Piblokto Album. The combination of that pure pop voice and easy listening strings with the bizarre wordplay of the song is just magnificent. Great version of Cat Steven's 'Hard Headed woman' is another highlight, and his is the first version of Elton's 'Your Song' I've ever enjoyed. Rest is filler, really - nothing too unlistenable though. Worth it for the half dozen solid classics - buy before ... Read More:
