While 1993's 'Add It Up' retrospective is more appealing to Femmes' fans as it showcases a healthy dose of rarities, outtakes and early singles as well as the 'classics' this is an excellent cheap introduction for the uninitiated who are curious to check out one of the most important and influential American bands of the last few decades. Although the Femmes' star has waned significantly since their first three seminal albums (their 3rd album was 'Blind Leading The Naked' not '3' as reviewed mistakenly below) brought their bittersweet twisted country-punk hybrid of rock n roll and rockabilly folk crashing into America's consciousness they're still capable of producing great albums like 'Why Do Birds Sing','Rock' and the snarling hardcore flavours ... If you think about it, a soundtrack ought really to reflect and enhance the tone and texture of a movie. It shouldn't be about taking songs of the moment from bands of the moment. Too often that seems to be the case, and the soundtrack album lacks any form of unity or cohesion. It is often the case that the songs on the album never even featured in the movie. But not in this case, oh no!

I don't think I have ever encountered a movie and soundtrack which are so inseparable. Somehow atmospheric and sentimental, while menacing and industrial at the same time, the soundtrack almost eclipses the movie. It certainly encapsulates it. It is impossible to watch the movie, without hearing the songs - and they really are a great bunch of songs! ... Read More:
