The version of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’ included here was the very first single I bought by myself without the aid of a parent, so it is special for me. Years later the chiming introduction and the golden toned harmonies still exert a hold over me. But what of the rest of this compilation? The rest is mostly accomplished country rock with a number of Matthews compositions and covers of songs by such as Neil Young, Richard Thompson and James Taylor. Although Matthew’s own songwriting doesn’t quite possess the cutting edge of some of his contemporaries his songs do grow on you and have a charming bittersweet quality.
