While preparing for 'Peter and the Wolf' Sting listened to some earlier recordings and monitored the reactions of his own children to the different interpretations. He decided to record a version in which the only character who speaks with his (Sting's) natural voice is Peter. Claudio Abbado helped him to create the other accents. The resulting narration is enthusiastic and charasmatic but never too contrived.
The extras on the disc are a real joy too. The delightful little upbeat march in B flat major (op.99) is for me two and a half minutes of pure bliss. The 'Overture on Hebrew Themes' is a beautiful reading and the 'Classical Symphony' is the best reading I've ever heard. I would purchase this disc for this performance of the Classical ... Good morning house plants, yes that's right - it's wake up time...
You see the 5 stars, there's no need to talk about enjoying this album though it can't hurt:
Really enjoy this album!
Was reading the LJ reviews, hadn't planned to leave one then realized: no mention of the open-eye visual delights that accompany this funky soundcake. Artistically creative and synchronized with the music, a complete trip awaits ~ 21st Century Psychedelia!

Lemon Jelly move on but not necessarily quite where you expect... and, for fans of "Lost Horizons" this one needs care. Less quirky than its hugely successful predecessor, "'64 to '95" moves closer to mainstream club music, losing and gaining on the way. Gone is much of the humorous and inherently "uplifting" feel of "Lost Horizons" that made it such an enjoyable mass appeal album, in its place is a harder edge with more drawn out, less "easy-listening" work-outs of its themes. Serious stuff then, but is it any good?
Well, first impressions aren't great - initially most tracks seem like fairly lightweight electro-rambles underpinned by some odd & often annoying looped samples. But, after a few times through, things start to register much ... Read More:

It does take a while to get used to the English singing, but it also really helps to get the jokes across. I was splitting my sides when I first listened to it, there are some real gems in this translation (A prime example being in the middle of Susanna and Marcellina's duet as they exchange insults: 'Your quality/ Your quantity').
The conducting is wonderful, always taken at a brilliant pace by that great Mozartian David Parry. The cast are spot on, the only real exception being Yvonne Kenny's Countess (a good voice, just a bit too much vibrato here). I especially love Christopher Purves' Figaro, William Dazeley's Count, Jonathan Veira's Bartolo, John Graham Hall's Basilio and Sarah Tynan's Barbarina. Purves is perfect in his role; so characterful that ... Read More:
