Two years ago I purchased Ashkenazy's recording of the Chopin Etudes made in the eighties and I have never been more satisfied with a CD: his touch his beautiful, the technical control fully developed, the melodic line soaring. It is one of Ashkenazy's finest recordings, in my opinion.

To come across a CD such as this one, recorded in 1960, showcasing Ashkenazy's earlier recording of the Etudes was a gift. Sure enough, the tone is wonderful, the technical aspects of the playing fully understood and taken with ease. Yet, there is something missing from this recording: don't get me wrong, it is still a beautiful CD, with a fine Lisztian 'filler' to go with it.

I cannot rate this recording of the Chopin Etudes highly enough. The pianist possesses titanic control of the instrument both in terms of virtuosity and sensitivity and his interpretation of these miniature masterworks shows real musical intelligence.

If you can only afford to purchase one cd of Chopin's etudes I would highly recommend this recording as it is certainly the most engrossing rendition I have heard (and I possess several recordings of these etudes). The sound quality is superb too.
