Two years ago I purchased Ashkenazy's recording of the Chopin Etudes made in the eighties and I have never been more satisfied with a CD: his touch his beautiful, the technical control fully developed, the melodic line soaring. It is one of Ashkenazy's finest recordings, in my opinion.
To come across a CD such as this one, recorded in 1960, showcasing Ashkenazy's earlier recording of the Etudes was a gift. Sure enough, the tone is wonderful, the technical aspects of the playing fully understood and taken with ease. Yet, there is something missing from this recording: don't get me wrong, it is still a beautiful CD, with a fine Lisztian 'filler' to go with it.
Perhaps Ashkenazy was too young: the pieces are beautifully ...
