Michael Powers is indeed another well kept secret. Great songs, outstanding musicianship and a stunning voice. Powers is a great modern bluesman and a tribute to the genre.

Some of my favourite tracks are the haunting "Oh John", "Every Grain of Sand" and the driving "Wild Side".

The album is polished and worth every penny, however you might want to start with Onyx Root. I can't decide which album I like best! Onyx Root is less polished, but I like that...

Dylan's critical reputation had sort of gotten into a funk, and this album does not help any matters. Some people want to tell you its one of the great underrated masterpieces of Dylan's career. If you're were talking about STREET-LEGAL or EMPIRE BURLESQUE, I'd tend to agree, although the later seems to have a fairly good critical reputation.

As far as the Christianity goes, this is the by far the most accessible to a secular audience, although SLOW TRAIN COMING is better aesthetically. Though there are several explicit Christian songs, Dylan included secular music, allowing it to reach the secular audience more on their level, and yet retaining the fundamentals of Christianity. With the anniversary bandwagons churning round recently for yet more CD collections and anthologies of Dylan's back catalogue; and attendant fuss over 2007 wunderkid Mark Ronson's "sacreligious" remix of an old Dylan track :

why not investigate a more original interpreter of Dylan's material with this fine album ?

The voice is amazing and arrangements are great and surprising and throw new light on old familiar tracks; some playful, some epic (the version of "Sugar Baby" is almost operatically grand and doom-laden !)

Barb played one show of this material at the Edinburgh Festival in the year just gone, and if you ever get a chance to see her perform these songs live in the future, I would thoroughly recommend it ... Read More:

The Bootleg Series Vol.1-3: Rare & Unreleased 1961-1991

Once you've got the Bob Dylan "essentials", either on "Greatest Hits" and "Greatest Hits vol. II" or on the classic "Biograph" set, this is where you go.

These first three "bootleg series" CDs contain 58 outtakes, live performances, alternates and rarities from between 1961 and 1991. And these aren't rejects; on the contrary, this box contains some of Dylan's best, if not best known, songs, such as "Walking Down The Line", "If You See Her, Say Hello", "Golden Loom", "Only A Hobo", "Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart" and many others.

If you want a little more than just the hits, this is where to look. A great addition to Bob Dylan's catalogue, as is the other two volumes in the "bootleg series", the Royal Albert Hall concert and "Live ... Read More:

Under the Moon

Whilst Barbara Sfraga is not too well known internationally the Naxos release Oh What A Thrill revealed a talented singer known mainly in the USA. The Naxos introductory release of this artist was a WOW with most jazz fans around the world and the critics. The follow up Under the Moon is equally as good including some well known standards which Barbara Sfraga handles in her own inimicable way . In addition there are a number of own works which are well worth the hearing.
These two past releases are to be added to in due course with Timeliness Frozen in Time which is yet, apparently, to appear in the UK.
In any case any lover of jazz should watch out for the latter as well as Under the Moon releases.
An artist worth watching for.
