I have been a fan of Neil's for more than 35 years, and have been generally disappointed with his output this decade (never mind the Geffen years). Throughout his career his albums have been patchy. That's part of his appeal - crap and genius. But this album is wonderful. It sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday and is at the apogee of guitar rock - this is what it's all about. Neil Young has written some of the prettiest pop tunes, some of the most dissolute, and dragged out of himself some of the most moving noise. This set ranks with Weld - which for me is praise indeed. And the chance to hear the core Horse is an honour. While it often it feels a little sad to be raving over things from your youth, this is a real gem.

I held off from reviewing this because I actually like Dar as an artist and I didn't want to give the wrong impression by being the first review and it being a bad one. Because it will be. This was one of the (if not THE) most disappointing albums I bought last year, a crashingly dull collection of songs in which Dar sounds so detatched and so remote that it's impossible to understand what it was that led her to drag herself into the studio, or even write the songs in the first place. It all plods along, with Dar's usually fresh and humour-filled voice sounding flat and bored and barely connected with anything she's singing. Please allow me a moment of heresy: having been a fan of Matthew Sweet's since Girlfriend came out in 1991, I honestly think that with 'Under The Covers' he's made his masterpiece.

This is not just another covers album. Sweet and Hoffs have chosen their material with a connoisseur's ear, and their vocals and Sweet's magnificent arrangements somehow manage to stay loyal and true to the core of the songs while bringing something new and original to them at the same time. It's almost as though these are the recordings the original writers would have wanted to have made in the 1960s if they'd had sufficient skill, taste and studio facilities.
