Search: Everythings Been Done Before
by: Al Bowlly
Release Date March 19, 2007
This is a distillation of an earlier 3-CD set from Avid, about which I wrote a rave review at the time. It's a fascinating compilation, which makes up a chronological journey through Al's recording career. If you were lucky enough to buy the earlier set then there's nothing here that wasn't issued earlier, but if you missed out then grab this now. It's the ideal introduction to the supreme singer, and excellent value for money.
Search: Everythings Been Done Before
by: Bing Crosby
Release Date May 29, 2006
This collection explores the links in the Crosby Brothers parallel vocal careers. The first disc has the more famous Bing accompanied either by Bob's Orchestra or Bob Cats with their initial pairing in 1938 producing YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY; then moving on to the songs from HOLIDAY INN with only ABRAHAM taken from the movie's soundtrack. The familiar SAN ANTONIO ROSE and WHEN MY DREAMBOAT COMES HOME contrast with the rarer THAT'S HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU and ROSE OF SANTA ROSA in duet with The Chickadees whilst Connee Boswell and The Merry Macs also join Bing on some tracks. There are also radio broadcast clips when Bob joined Bing for light-hearted sibling rivalry via parodies to the tunes of ENJOY YOURSELF, LET'S DO IT AGAIN and a medley ... Read More:
Search: Everythings Been Done Before
by: Al Bowlly
Release Date July 07, 2003
This is the finest and most comprehensive collection of Al Bowlly recordings ever released on CD. This 3-Disc box of delights should be on the shelves of not only Al's many fans, but also of all British Dance Band enthusiasts. Recordings by the bands of Howard Godfrey, Harry Hudson and Arthur Lally are rarely reissued and there are some nice examples of their work here like "Got A Date With An Angel" (Howard Godfrey & his Waldorfians) and the hot "Hello Mike" (Lally). The only significant band missed out that Al recorded with is the Grosvenor House Dance Orchestra led by Sydney Lipton.
Al's all-too-short career as one of the leading popular singers of the 20th Century is covered here through 76 recordings which have been brilliantly ... Read More:

Search: Everythings Been Done Before
by: Al Bowlly
Release Date April 01, 1994
Although at just 20 tracks this is somewhat short measure by today's standards, it earns five stars because what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quantity. It covers the period from the early thirties, with one Roy Fox and one Lew Stone track, by way of two 1934 tracks with Monia Liter's piano accompaniment, thence to America with one Victor Young and five Ray Noble cuts, and back to England, with Reginald Williams, Ronnie Munro, and Lew Stone (again).
Don't be misled by Arthur Jackson's liner notes; Al never employed the falsetto voice - he didn't need to, having a spectacular natural vocal range, nor did he lapse into a corny form of scat singing. Rather, he sang from the heart and that comes across clear and true, some seventy ... Read More:

Although Susannah had a lot of sadness in her life and ultimately committed suicide, the recording of this album appears to have happened during a happy period if the song selection is to be believed.
While Susannah has recorded several albums devoted to particular composers, this is one of her eclectic albums drawn from a variety of sources. Fascinating rhythm (a top ten hit for Cliff Edwards in 1925 and frequently covered in the years since then) is perhaps the most famous song here. One of two tracks composed by George and Ira Gershwin (the other is Who cares), it opens the album and sets the mood, although more up-tempo than most of the material here.
Among the other great songs here are Swing that music (Louis Armstrong), Do nothing till ... Read More:
