I thoroughly recommend this album for fans of the band, if only for the live rendition of modern music;it is so well played and a wonderful alternative to the album version. The first song off-key flub is a beauty - straight after Bill's guitar intro it is the keyboard accompaniment that goes so wrong, but it will make you smile! I'd love to have seen the bands faces. Don't let it put you off, this album is a great partner to 'live in the air age'.The vocals are superb throughout.

I adored this album as a student in Leeds and loved Be-Bop dearly. But I knew then and knew now that Nelson, whilst a sublime talent, could have done with some editing and some creative co-writing perhaps. Some of the songs on this album are very good indeed, but some collapse under the weight of their chopping and changing, Fair Exchange being one, Blazing Apostles another. The songs aren't that strong that hey can stand so much arbitraty variations in tempo and key. It ain't jazz. It feels like he had fragments of tunes he pieced togather. The best songs are the songs where the internal life and strength of the songs are allowed their course - Beauty Secrets etc. The old adage is so true here - keep it simple. Comparisons have been made by other ... Read More:

In terms of Live album greats this has got to be in the top ten (nothing can compare to my no. 1 UFO's "Strangers in the Night"). Beautiful guitar playing and song writing from the genius that was Bill Nelson. A timeless classic.

The past 30 years have not been kind to assessments of Be Bop Deluxe. Originally positioned as another Spiders from Mars type of band, Nelson's guitar wouldn't be suppressed and follow the Mick Ronson path.
But Nelson's guitar-playing was the only reliably good aspect of the band. His voice was nothing like expressive enough to rival Bowie's. And the songwriting left an awful lot to be desired.
Take my favourite BBD tune: 'Music in Dreamland'. It has a wonderful guitar, organ and piano intro, and not a bad verse. But there is no chorus, just an extended, semi-operatic bridge, and then we're back to a repeat of the instrumental intro.
I hate to criticise the band, as Simon Clarke (renamed Andy to avoid having too many ... Read More:

For what amounts to a high class pop album on the fringes of the 70s "prog rock" phenomenon, Be Bop Deluxe made some excellent music. To this day, it sounds fresh, clean, melodic and totally free of the pompous excesses of that era. Bill Nelson's band could easily pass for 2005 headliners, were they not getting on a bit (in fact, two sometime members of BBD have since died.)
Bill himself was the sound of BBD, and later Bill Nelson's Red Noise and a succession of innovative solo albums. His trademark was a soaring guitar sound evident throughout these tracks. It seems a strangely familiar style, but I'm struggling to think who Bill most reminds me of. Echoes of Hendrix at times, perhaps the occasional riff remiscent of a Jimmy Page, but a much lighter, splashier ... Read More:

This expertly sequenced compilation demonstrates such an exhuberant creativity that it's almost impossible to believe that Be Bop didn't seem to leave much of an imprint on the consciousness of rock music as a whole. "Postcards from the Future' is such an apt title, because echoes of the future are indeed heard in every single one of these tracks - maybe this set will redress that balance. Sublime. If you are new to Be Bop, start here, open your mind, and let the genius in.
