When Boulez first went to Bayreuth to conduct Parsifal in the mid-60's it was a highly controversial choice. It was not so long after he had expressed the desire to blow up all the opera houses and here he was, setting heretical foot in the most hallowed halls of all of them. And, what's more, in the famous production by Wieland Wagner that had been the special preserve of the likes of Knappertsbusch and Krauss since its inception back at the re-opening Festival of 1951. The performances, too, were just as controversial. Too fast, too superficial, too light and the orchestra found it hard to follow his batonless beat, they said.

La Netrebko may be winning all the headlines, but this disc displays her faults all too clearly.
Her technique is flawed - no trills, smudged runs; her high notes unreliable (or simply flat in some cases);her tone rather heavy and slavic for the repertoire. None of this would matter if she had the intellect to bring the music alive, and knowledge of the necessary languages. But on this evidence, she hasn't. She may aquire those things. I hope she does - it IS a gorgeous voice. But here the music fails to sparkle and live as it should - her phrasing is peculiar and her diction poor, her style, in short is unidiomatic.
Her Russian album is a different matter and shows her at her best. But she makes heavy weather of the Romantic ... Read More:

The most popular of Mozart's operas range from 'The Marriage of Figaro' to 'The Magic Flute'; sometimes people will include 'The Abduction from the Seraglio' in that listing. Few extend the listing of great operas back to 'Idomeneo: King of Crete', but this is in many ways the logical starting point for observing Mozart's development as an opera composer.

'Idomeneo' was the first dramatic opera in Mozart's mature style; written while he was still in Salzberg, it attracted the attention of come in the musical court in Vienna. There are decidedly French qualities to ... Read More:
