Back in `99, I bought the fabulous Hed kandi compilation CD called Serve Chilled. One of the first albums on the new Hed Kandi label, it had a great selection of chill-out tracks that introduced me to several new artists. Over the years the quality of Hed Kandi comps varied, but generally you would get your money's worth, at least until mark Doyle left in 2005.

So when I recently decided to get some new low-key background music (as my collection was looking a bit dated), I looked around to see what was hot. I opted to buy Angels Fall after seeing the very high ratings on Amazon. Should have known better.

What a tragic mistake. These 3 CDs are utterly, utterly insipid. There are probably only four tracks that warrant ... Read More:

I'm a big fan of the Ministry of Sound's more laid-back collections, and the Chillout series is a great way to be introduced to 'intelligent' artists and styles you won't often hear elsewhere. But this album is a long way short of some of the earlier efforts, and I question whether many of the tracks are Chillout at all.

The best Chillout tracks are a downbeat blend of electronic drum & bass, samples and novelty synthesiser noises with more traditional accoustic instruments and vocals, in just the right proportions to send a mellow ripple through your body. There is almost none of that here.

Much More Than Much Love

'Eclectic' is probably the best way to describe this album. It's very Finley Quaye - some reggae beats and vocals, catchy choruses, and a diverse range of songs. From the upbeat (Something to Say, Overriding Volunteer) to the heartfelt (Dice, Living Without You), he manages to cram it all in without the flow feeling forced. It's one of those albums you can play all the way through, again and again. Quaye's music has changed and evolved over the years, but he's managed to keep his own distinctive style and seems to sign his name on every track. Excellent.

I bought this cd because I liked track number 10 "Dice" when I heard it played on the OC tv programme, though I can't say that I'll remember anything on this cd apart from "Dice" in ten years time.And I found that I got fed up listening to this cd after a few days - the music sounds old-fashioned (reminds me of the 1960s for some reason),the guitar music was awful on some tracks - no clear individual notes or chords (these dudes and dudettes aren't Mark Knopfler playing Sultans of Swing or Romeo and Juliette,for example).If this is the best mix from the OC I would advise people to steer clear of the others.And don't let the poor quality of the music on this cd detract you from buying the dvds of the tv programme which is as good as people say it is.

MOS Chilled 1991-2008

Many of the other reviews about this product are critical of this album as they seem to be saying that it has too many good songs that they already have. I do not see why this should be a problem as having all these very good tracks in one package must be a good thing.
If you are new to this genre of music like I was then this album is the ideal starting point and I would highly recommend it to you.
