Smooth-voiced Welshman, Ricky Valance is best recalled for his 1960 Chart topping single TELL LAURA I LOVE HER, which sold over a million copies in the UK. Dealing with death in a car crash, Ricky's version was a cover of Ray Peterson's US hit with its controversial theme incurring press accusations of "bad taste" that ensured the song was put on the BBC's banned list. Nevertheless, the record's success lead to Ricky's disc being a hit in 14 countries, with overall sales estimated to have reached seven million copies worldwide.

1) She's part of folk royalty (if you didn't know) - her dad is Martin Carthy, her mum is Norma Waterson (both legends in their own right), her aunt and uncle are Lal and Mike Waterson and Oliver Knight is her cousin!
2) She can't half play the fiddle.
3) She has one of the most beautiful voices you'll ever hear, and she can really sing, I mean, really. I saw her live and the first song she did accapella... gobsmacking. And she's from Yorkshire! What more do you want?!

For once there's a top class folk compilation with superb performances, great songs and a thoughtful selection...there's no "Streets of London" or old out of copyright clunkers here, just 100% enjoyment!
There's any number of highlights but pride of place probably goes to Eliza Carthy's stunning performance of "Fisher Boy" - there should be a copy of this rendition in every home, it's that good. There's a splendid variety of music and styles here, which complement each other splendidly - the compilers deserve genuine praise for putting together a really fine collection.
