This new CD captures a live performance from 1984 when Matt Monro was once again touring Australia. This was his 14th tour of the country and the final night of the tour was a great success. From the opening song clarity and atmosphere makes it a super performance. Matt always tailored the words for his venues and it was touching to hear references to Australia in "The Second Time Around". It is also an opportunity to listen into the comedy and banter between Matt and the audience and orchestra. This must have been a magical night for the audience and I know that this was the experience he created night after night.

I welcome any Matt Monro issue that adds new items to my discography; in this three cd set there are very many overlaps however. What bugged me more is that recording dates and the accompanying orchestras are not mentioned at all; instead we get liner notes that list the movies from which the songs were taken; sometimes with too much artifice: Stranger In Paradise had been around since 1940 (with different words) before it was used in film; the same goes for Stardust, Chattanooga Choo Choo and some others; but the quality of the singing is beyond reproach, and in that it would be a good buy for newcomers to the Monro world, certainly at this price.

This is another amazing collection of the velevety tones of the master. But the best surprize is the release of five new tracks never released to CD before. It's been a long time coming and is aptly fitting for the 20th Anniversary. It's a great easy listening collection of his well known hits and will bring back some wonderful memories to the listener. It's also a treat that some of the oldies have been remastered. Well done EMI. Fantastic

This score is perhaps the finest musical output Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse have ever done. However, there is far more to "Stop The World - I Want To Get Off" than the score. Taking the concept of Commedia dell'Arte to new heights, Newley and Bricusse have crafted a delightfully funny concept that is by the same token extremely touching, as we initially like Littlechap, feel happiness for him as he finally gets ahead in life, and lastly sympathy and pity for him as he realizes the errors he has made with his life. Add to this the fact that every number in the score in eminently hummable, and capable of sticking in your brain for weeks upon end. Sammy does not merely sing: He entertains. This CD, containing live recordings of several classic numbers, is not simply background music. You'll want to take the time to sit down and listen and have fun.
The main reason I purchased this is that I heard one day Sammy singing Talk to the Animals, and was enchanted by it, and so far this is the only available recording I can find. He fills Leslie Bricusse's song with vivacity, playfulness and energy.

Other highlights are Candyman (the only original studio track on the disc), Mr Bojangles (moving as ever) and Gonna Build a Mountain. Sit back, get those toes a-tapping and enjoy.
