Anyone considering this box set will most likely already know Pentangle's music. So, no need to mention how wonderful the music is.

However, what is worth mentioning is that Sanctuary reissued this box set in 2008 - and this is the version to get, as the enclosed 60-page booklet is better glued in to the box set and looks like it will not fall apart - a major complaint of the earlier box set version.

Towner's modus operandi consists of a towering acoustic technique played with a disciplined neo-classical precision, but the overall effect still sound like a man sufficiently comfortable that the style appears almost laid-back. Some tracks betray immense technical complexity, which Towner translates to a lyrical purity matched by precious few guitarists. Elements of jazz and blues licks creep in on several compositions, and sound entirely natural in their setting. A joy to behold, and certainly worthy of 5 stars.

This is a rarity - a Mingus album with no duff tracks at all - everything is spot-on.The eclecticism of the music and its execution are breathtaking - if you need music to wake you up, try Boogie Stop Shuffle (so that's where they got the Mission Impossible theme from!).The gentler side of Mingus emerges beautifully on the slower tracks such as Pork Pie Hat.As for the recording - how did they manage such stunning sound? OK,it's remastered, but compare it to Monk CDs from the same time and it leaves them behind - vibrant,balanced,clear and dynamic - a must-buy!

Just to say that I think the previous reviewer made a mistake when rating this album - 5 stars, surely! Talk about value for money! And most definitely worth the dosh. Three great albums, from the sublime Blow By Blow to Guitar Shop via Wired - storming! What I really like about Jeff Beck's playing is that, despite being flash as anything (which, incidentally he carries off superbly), he also can play a ballad, the mark of a great player. 'Cause We've Ended As Lovers is a case in point. There are those who criticise Mr Beck for being too brash but obviously they haven't listened to this, his playing is agonisingly sweet and restrained, as it is on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.
