Search: Greenwood Laddie Mrs Caprons Reel Tune
by: Eliza Carthy
Release Date May 01, 1998
Eliza Carthy belongs to that group of so-called 'folk babes', as the media has procliamed (Hey, they're female, they play folk music, let's coin an original term). Cynically I could suggest that being an attractive young female and having famous folk parents helps to shift an album, but all cynicisim here should be left at the door. This is a thoroughly stunning album, which mixes folk with electronica and a tiny bit of popular music. The first CD, Red, is the more poppy of the two, but contains some excellent catchy tracks, such as her cover of Ben Harper's 'Walk Away' and the gloriously upbeat 'Stumbling On'. Whilst Carthy may not have the best voice in the business, it fits perfectly with the folk tunes and juxtaposes brilliantly ... Read More:

Release Date October 06, 2003
1) She's part of folk royalty (if you didn't know) - her dad is Martin Carthy, her mum is Norma Waterson (both legends in their own right), her aunt and uncle are Lal and Mike Waterson and Oliver Knight is her cousin!
2) She can't half play the fiddle.
3) She has one of the most beautiful voices you'll ever hear, and she can really sing, I mean, really. I saw her live and the first song she did accapella... gobsmacking. And she's from Yorkshire! What more do you want?!
4)Her versatilty. Some of her songs are thigh-slappingly folktastic but then you get songs like Stumbling On, which is more or less jazz, or Billy Boy, which starts of sounding almost like dub reggae, goes folky and then has a Santana-ish guitar solo. And it's not ... Read More:

by: Eliza Carthy
Release Date February 17, 2003
i bought red with the album rice and have for some reason always preferred rice, probably as its more of a traditional album. the red album gave eliza carthy the chance to experiment a bit more and this album has grown on me through the years, there are some outstanding songs on this album, namely 10000 miles, walk away and adieu adieu which when played live have always been crowd pleasers. eliza carthy has the knack of making a song her own, when she sings contempary cover songs and with walk away written by ben harper, its a far more richer interpretation of the song, than bens original. hopefully eliza will continue pushing the boundaries of folk music further, because after a few plays, you realise red is a cracking album.
