This is a great collection to get, especially if you don't have many of Dr John's solo CD's already. On 2 CD's you get 39 tracks covering his career from the recordings with Ronnie Barron (tracks 1 & 2) all the way up to 1989.

Dr John is one the most important New Orleans musicians alive and this collection covers the many varied styles of his career. Naturally the sound quality of the earliest recordings, which date from 1959 are a little rough, that may be the age or it may be what was intended.

Stylistically there's huge variety here:
The Voodoo sound (Gris Gris etc)
Prof Longhair (Tipitina, Memories of Prof Longhair)
Early 70's New Orleans Funk (Right Place Wrong Time, Life)

I don't know too much about later Dr John. I have had this album on my Ipod for ages without listening and it is with a slightly shamed face that I say I only really sought it out again after hearing cher's (!!)version of Walking on Gilded Splinters on the david Holmes/Cherrystones CD. Like nothing else I own, but fantastic. I treasure the day that I got bored and drunk on the train from Charing X and gave it a go. vocal-wise the nearest comparison is capt. beefhart, but it is far more accessible than that. Just. Really. Really. Good. If you're reading this review - forget Cher, concentrate on the Davis Holmes and if that sounds right then give it a pop. late edit: reading other reviews I would just say that the running time might be short - but give ... What can I say? Bought this, having got into blues while living in USA. Truly marvellous. Some old and new blues, to show you where it came from, and where it's going. The range is tremedous, with familiar, modern-day artists such as Van Morrison, sitting very comfortably alongside Albert King, Mahalia Jackson and Tommy Johnson. Over 2 hours of music that will, I guarantee, get right under your skin. Very highly recommended.

excellent selection of tracks some fantastic artist that you may not ordinarily choose to listen to. this music to have on while doing whatever! i give it a yes yes, just the right ballance, excellent hip hop, soul, beautiful folk and Jim White where did he come from brilliant. well worth your pennies. nice done m'cheba...

do you like funky soul music? Buy this. Absolute class. I'm not a huge fan of complilations, but the soul jazz efforts are always essential. A wide range of music too from Eddie Bo's unbelievably funky "Thang" to Irma Thomas' sweet soul "Ruler of my heart".
