Search: Guns Of Navarone - The Skatalites
by: Skatalites
Release Date January 20, 2003
This compilation of Duke Reid produced tracks by Don Drummond with the Baba Brooks Band and later as a member or with the Skatalites brings together the best ska outside the Studio One and Top Deck compilations. The short solos of Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso and Tommy McCook grace all these classic tracks going from relaxed swingers like Feeling fine to frenetic stompers like Dragon weapon, to cite just the 2 least known tracks. Recorded more than 40 years ago still these swinging and rocking instrumentals are a pleasure to hear and dance to.

Release Date April 22, 2002
If you wonder about the title, I'd better explain!
A lot of titles, especially on disc 2, have been seen and heard on previous reggae compilations. Nothing wrong with that, as the choice of the better-known or familiar numbers eg 007,Miss Jamaica,Housewife's Choice,Guns of Navarone, is a reasonable choice of good hot or cool ska and from both the formative years of 1962-3 and the established-sound era of 64-66.
The secret here is the mix between these and a whole stack of stuff, especially from 1960/61/62 that ain't so well known, or is really recherche. One after another, ones you know or ones you never heard of before, sit neatly together as both discs flow quite liquidly into a great listening experience.

Release Date May 26, 2003
Once again Castle Music has done itself great credit with a wonderfully-evocative compilation which captures the spirit of the year it claims to portray despite the fact that many of the leading artists and singles of the day don't feature. No Beatles and no Stones of course, but you do get 2 tracks each from The Kinks and The Small Faces, Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" and UK No.1's from The Foundations (Baby Now That I've Found You) and Long John Baldry (Let the Heartaches Begin). Although only about two-thirds the tracks on this double CD were chart hits, those that weren't commercial successes are often worth a listen too. The Montanas' "Ciao Baby", Joe Simon's "Nine Pound Steel", and Joe Tex's "Show Me" are all great tracks. You also ... Read More:
