Having recently purchased and thoroughly loved the overdue re-issue of Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" I felt compelled to revisit Brian Wilson ,s 1988 solo album . Released after a period with notorious therapist Eugene Landy who on the album's release was given several song co-writing credits( Removed after Landy,s ejection from Wilson's life in 1991 ) the album was critically lauded but didn't do that well on the sales front. Why the hell not I feel duty bound to ask ? For while this album doesn't have the depth and wracked majesty of Dennis's album ( not that comparisons are that valid) it has a lavish pop splendour of it's own. It has tunes that would make an extremely irate scorpion sheathe its sting.

Mountain Music of Kentucky Vol.2

This was hailed as 'one of the greatest records in the entire literature of American folk song' and for once this is no hyperbole. The recordings were made in 1959 by John Cohen around Hazard, Kentucky and have a wonderful raw quality that beatifully evoke images of smokey wood huts in the Appalachian hills. It is a diverse collection of artists with virtuoso banjo picking (esp. the legendary Roscoe Holcomb), fiddling and even unaccompanied singing. My current favourite is 'Hills of Mexico' by Roscoe Holcomb but the music is so rich & deep there are many treasures lying undiscovered. For anybody interested in genuine 'old time' mountain music this is a must have.

unbelievably great album - I didn't think they could easily better their first one, but they have! The only let down is the packaging of this edition - it's fun to start with but difficult to store on your CD shelf! The Bonus tracks on disc 2 are worth the 2 or 3 extra quid.
