'Me and Mr Johnson' has some solid playing from EC and his love and mastery of Robert Johnson's musics is pretty evident on this album. I think the reason why this album gets slated as much as it does is because the terrible Simon Climie production relegates it to the 'elevator' music described by other reviewers. The music and playing are pretty good (although without the fire and passion of 'From the Cradle') but the production is yet again flat and uninspiring. When will EC learn everyone hates this style of production and it does nothing for his music? This album is very polished and slick, which detracts from the rawness of the blues played, but there are some good tracks here and it's a good homage from EC of Johnson's amazing playing ... If this guy could have been handed an electric guitar, nobody would give a damn about Hendrix. Even if you're not used to hearing proper acoustic blues, make the effort and you'll be blown away by how much a man could achieve with only his voice, his guitar and one crackly track to get the song down on. I guess that selling your soul to the devil is cheating a bit though... I give this particular compilation only 4 stars because, although a good introduction to one of the greatest musicians ever, there are other comps with everything he did, and for not much more dough. So forget your limp emo or skater-punk nonsense and discover this cool bloke.

When his first Dowland approach was released a few years ago, there was a gentleman from the States that pointed right here in this pages that Sting's recording is far from what we should expect from a year 2000 journey into John Dowland's music and, if somebody is really willing to hit the sky into this direction, then ECM Records recordings with The Dowland Project is the right answer. It is still indubitable truth and though I pretty much appreciate most of the Sting Projects or The Music of Police Projects, I should advise Sting to stick on being played by others, not to perform what he obviously isn't, a classical trained singer.

Unlike the other reviewers I would say that if you want to have a collection that shows you can tell the difference between inspiration and the run-of-the mill then you should have this original release (at least on a major label) and if you must have the rest for purposes of comparison then it is best kept to one side. The rest does not demonstrate anything except the difference, and also that the basic blues can be pretty boring even when played by it's foremost artist. I bought this on vinyl in 1968 and can still remember how disappointed I was a year or so later when I got vol.2. There was a lot more of the same but without the intensity. Whoever compiled this first album did a very good job and got it right every time.
The reason is simply that there is ... Read More:
