This overview of country between 1954 (Davy Crockett) and 1984 (Highwayman) is an excellent way to hear 25 of its biggest hits.
Major artists are featured twice: Lefty Frizell, Johnny Cash (3x), Marty Robbins, Stonewall Jackson, Johnny Horton and Hawkshaw Hawkins. Among all these country classics stand out the bustling El Paso, the poignant Long black veil (also magnificently covered by The Band), the bluegrass Ballad of Jed Clampett, Shell Silverstein's tough Boy named Sue and the Mexican tale of Pancho and Lefty. And kudos to Little Jimmy Dickens for his track with the most remarkable title of them all.
