Possibly THE soul album of the 80's. Serious songs dealing with insecurity, heartbreak and at times the more sensual side of relationships this was Vandross' creative peak before his A+R dept. couldn't decide how to market him and his voice became frequently wasted on poorer, less adult music. Although often written off as some sickly 'lurvve' man this album highlighted the insecurity and doubt which is the core to many of the man's best songs. The string arrangements on numerous songs, particularly 'Other Side of the World' are innovative and highlight how musically redundant most of the current 'bump and grind' music is. Luther Vandross embodied the soul slow ballad - the idle album for a candlelit dinner. One of my friends used to label his music as "foreplay music" and this album is an apt description. I remember going thru a bad breakup at the time and listening to "If Only for One Night" - does u up badly because it is such a good song. Other gems are "Here and Now" - the perfect wedding song, as well as "If this World Were Mine". Mamma Mia, soul from the soul.

I have given this 5 stars because Luther's songs here merit the maximum award but truth is no artist on this tribute or indeed anywhere in the world can come close to sounding as good as he did.
There are some very good covers and versions on here - it is just impossible not to hear Luther's unique voice when listening. His range was incomparable.
Aside from being surprised Fantasia manged to get on here and Wyclef's version of Always and Forever, it is definitely worth buying this but only if you already have the originals by the original!
