...but their effect was diluted by the likes of The Darkness and The Backstreet Boys. This album is a reasonably enjoyable compilation of what are, for the most part, middle-of-the-road songs, pleasant enough for background music. Personal highlights include "Purple Rain" by Prince and "This Year's Love" by David Gray (which has a legitimate claim as one of "the most moving songs of all time", unlike Michelle McManus' offering which one can only assume was put on as some sort of comic relief). I was also surprised to find that I enjoyed the N Sync track -- very mellow and understated. Overall though, I wouldn't recommend shelling out for this album. Some of the tracks are ok but disc 1 and 3 are not very good at all. So to be honest this is not a good album at all apart from Disc 2 which has "my girl" "whishing and hoping" and "Kiss me" which are good though.

What makes a good cd? I reckon a good mix of old and new that you want to listen to over and over again. That is certainly the case with this, 'The Very Best of New Woman'! It has old classics like Aretha Franklin's 'Respect' closely followed by the wonderful 'Build Me Up Buttercup' by The Foundations. These fantastic golden oldies are put side by side with some of the best up and coming stars of this year- Norah Jones 'Sunrise' is a definate hit, as well as the awesome Jamie Cullum with 'High And Dry'. This really is a great compilation, and you'll be bopping away to it in no time. Also, a great present- either to a friend, a girlfriend or to a mum on Mothers day! What more could you ask?

I think this is a great compilation - all the current chart hits are on there but there's also a great track from Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over the Rainbow which I saw on Top of the Pops 2 recently and wondered where to buy, so I was really pleased to see it here on this complecation. Mums will love this - westlife and robbie williams are on here with Kylie and Atomic Kitten but there's none of that irritating dance stuff, it's all great singles yuou can sing along to.
