Search: How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) - Jr. Walker
by: Various Artists
Release Date November 22, 1999
well-assembled box set containing just some of Motown's most golden and definitive classics. Nobody knew Motown Records was going to take off in the way it did. Berry Gordy intended to use his artists to break down the then racial barriers, intending to encapsulate a golden and distinct sound that would not only please a black audience but would too appeal to whites. Berry Gordys visions for the company paid off. Key artists like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder attracted a huge following from both blacks and whites.
Seemingly echoing the restrictions of ghetto life in Detroit (which is where Motown began) was the effective, bluesey Money (Thats What I Want) by Barret Strong, Motowns debut release. There ... Read More:

If you are, like me, old enough to remember when these numbers first came out - or at least covers by the likes of the Beatles (Money and Please Mr Postman) to the Who (Heatwave) via The Spencer Davis group(Every Little Bit Hurts) - then this compilation is a must, even though you'll probably have many or most of the tracks on other CDs and compilations.

Let me take it back a little further. Tamla Motown's first album in Britain, released in spring 1965 was '16 Big Hits'. That series continued for the rest of the 60s, reaching Volume 8. They continued in conjunction with the Chartbusters, featuring betwixt and between hits, ... Read More:

Double CD's of summer music have become a regular feature in Britain over the last few years. Several of these collections have focused exclusively on the sixties, and this is the 2002 variation on the theme.
All but two of the fifty four tracks are well known. Record companies like to unearth some unusual tracks every now and again, in the hope of getting extra sales from people who want these rarities. (It wasn't the reason I bought the album - I just happened to like the compilation as a whole). On this occasion, the rarities are Gimmie gimmie good lovin' (Crazy Elephant) and Walkin' my cat named Dog (Norma Tanega). I don't remember hearing either of them before.
In case you're wondering how Eddie Cochran qualifies for this set, Summertime ... Read More:
