Finally! All of Big Bill Broonzy's classic and hugely influential prewar sides gathered together, 128 sides recorded for labels like Paramount, ARC and Perfect Records.
The sound is not great, which is to be expected, but it is certainly as good as on any collection of this seminal and highly influential music, which features Big Bill as a solo performer as well as leading various small combos.

Big Bill Broonzy was one of the major links between country blues and the urban Chicago variety, and artists like Memphsi Slim and Muddy Waters recorded entire LPs of his material.

The considerable advances in digital remastering and noise removal seem to have passed the good folk at GVC by, as has the fact that virtually every title is already available on other similar compilations with vastly superior sound.
This looks and sounds like it was done in someone's bedroom - (typos like Barbecue "Bobb" don't help either). In short, an unimaginative selection with appalling sound quality. Avoid this and go for one of the many other rude compilations available.

Its a rare blues record that doesn't imply sex and this collection goes totally over the top.
In fact the only black blues artist I know of who had higher standards re lyrics is Fats Domino.
The only way to regard this sort of stuff is as comedy .The actual recordings would have been 78s as they go back to the 30s and in the 50s when Bill Haley started doing songs like this they had to be cleaned up.Even more so for Pat Boone who recorded Good Rockin' Tonight with a lyric change-but this song was mild compared to what had passed.
I think nowadays with all the 100s of books about the early days of the blues and rock'n'roll people know more than they did in the 50s.Though writers like Chuck Berry steered the lyrics away from ... Read More:
