This was the first opera I ever saw live, during its initial London run a few months after the Aldeburgh premiere. I still carry vivid memories of that evening as a magical experience. And magic certainly lies at the heart of this entrancing (almost literally) piece.

From the sounds of the forest breathing in the opening string glissandos to the fairies' glittering benediction on Duke Theseus house at the end, Britten conjures a wonderful array of colours and pictures from his relatively modest orchestra. Each group of characters is given its own distinctive orchestral palette - strings with woodwinds predominate for the Lovers, the trombone fills in its fatter, comical tones when the Rustics appear, horns add a touch of regality ... This reads like a veritable who's who of UK jazz. Having been lucky enough to see a lot of these performers live in London over the years this is like a personal 'best of' in terms of gigs I have been to. There are one or two hidden gems which I was not aware of - Haftor Medboe Group and Perfect Houseplants were new to me and both tracks are superb, especially the opener. I am a fan of Ian Shaw and he does not disappoint (as if he could!) on his Joni Mitchell cover. This album has a bit of everything from swing - courtesy of the fabulous Ray Gelato Giants, vocals - courtesy of Miss Claire Martin and Barb Jungr and instrumentals by, among others, Stephane Grappelli. Give it a listen, you will find your old favourites and some new favourites too - guaranteed.
