The Best Sixties Summer Party... Ever

Search: I Fought The Law
by: Various Artists

Release Date July 08, 2002
Double CD's of summer music have become a regular feature in Britain over the last few years. Several of these collections have focused exclusively on the sixties, and this is the 2002 variation on the theme.

All but two of the fifty four tracks are well known. Record companies like to unearth some unusual tracks every now and again, in the hope of getting extra sales from people who want these rarities. (It wasn't the reason I bought the album - I just happened to like the compilation as a whole). On this occasion, the rarities are Gimmie gimmie good lovin' (Crazy Elephant) and Walkin' my cat named Dog (Norma Tanega). I don't remember hearing either of them before.

In case you're wondering how Eddie Cochran qualifies for ... Read More:

Live at Shea Stadium: 13 Oct 1982/Remastered

Search: I Fought The Law
by: Clash

Release Date October 06, 2008
The problem with the Shea Stadium gig was that they were supporting a stadium rock band (The Who) and, thus, concentrated on some of their more audience-friendly tracks.

The best live Clash track I have ever heard is Complete Control. Other great lives songs include White Man In Hammersmith Palais, London's Burning and Capital Radio. None of which feature here.

Although there are some great Clash songs on here, and some are better than on the second half of From Here To Eternity, this does not represent the best of the Clash live.

To get a true picture of what the Clash were like live, you'd probably need the first half of From Here To Eternity, mixed with a random selection of tracks from this CD.

The Singles

Search: I Fought The Law
by: The Clash

Release Date June 04, 2007
While I agree that there may be more comprehensive Clash sets available (my personal favourite being 'The Story Of The Clash Volume 1') this release does exactly what it says on the tin. All the singles, though not in chronological order - unlike the previous 1991 version, combined with far improved artwork. And it is this that sold me on this CD.
The colourful booklet has been designed with care and features notes from the great and good on each track. Everybody from Pete Townsend to Danny Boyle and many inbetween, get to comment on their favourites and the impact these tracks had on them. Single sleeve artwork and illustrations adorn the liner notes together with some fine shots of the band. All in a slip-sleeved jewel case. And for once, no grammatical mistakes seem ... Read More:

Search: I Fought The Law
by: Toten Hosen

Release Date
Die Toten Hosen, as expected of a band whose name translates as The Dead Pants, do not take themselves too seriously. However don't be fooled they are no comedy band. What they achieve is to blend the best aspects of pop rock, the driving beat, catchy riffs and simple lyrics with the political consciousness and social comment of bands like Sham 69, the Clash et al. There is also a smattering of humour, often verging towards being quite perverse - see The Fly.

The great strength of the band is their ability to produce well crafted songs that grab your attention. As a non-German speaker it is possible to get the feel of the song, the mood and tembre is often quite clear. This album makes them accessible to an international audience.

I heartily recommend this to ... Read More:
