Well, it depends what you want from a Rake whether this is the recording for you. Conducting, orchestra and some of the cast are superb. Sarah Walker's Baba is the best you'll find and Sam Ramey is in fine, though rather inexpressive voice as Shadow. This set captures such excellent, vivid and clear performances that the story leaps out by just listening. You won't really even need to follow the printed libretto. Every single character is perfectly sung and the orchestra and conductor are in top form. The whole thing brims with wit and charm making it very very enjoyable. I have listened to it several times already.

There has been much comment on what makes a modern opera, and if this particular work fulfils the 'Opera' criteria. This is a fantastic way for many to approach opera, and it has just finished it's second Glyndebourne run. This recording is first rate and greatly benefits from the live performance. The countertenor singing of Chris Robson is 'alien' as this role intends and at times extremely touching. The controller role is a tour de force, and sung with ease by Clarron McFaddon. She scales a sonic f with ease! Nualla Willis is splendid and at times her sound is confused with Mr Robsons, further displaying that she also is an outsider. The relationship of Tina and Bill (Mary Plazas & Coxon) is beautifully sung and realised. Plazas's singing ... Read More:
