As a professional concert pianist for the last thirty years or so, it was a great relief to find that they have released everything you need on 2 CDs. Sure enough, since I bought it I have been able to discard the 1000 or so CDs that I had collected of performers like Cortot, Horowitz, Rachmaninoff and Schnabel (and I now have enough room for a pool table!). They are simply not necessary when you have these two CDs.

I have to disagree with the amazon in-house reviewer on this one. She's critical of the performance of the duo works in this collection (with Evelyn Crochet) but I've always found the performance of the great F minor fantasia absolutely compelling, and, hearing it again in this re-release, some 30-odd years after hearing the performance in its original incarnation, I was still gripped, despite some less than ideal sound.

I love the Gilels (father and daughter) and the Perahia/Lupu recordings but this is even more special. So, five stars to the Fantasia, - it's the other performances I find a occassionally unyielding (partly because of the ageing sound quality) and perfunctory (Bendel's fault there, I'm afraid).
