I have chosen to review this set as it would appear to be the only way now left by which to acquire the sublime Byzantium, as performed by Solti, the Chicago Symphony and the majectic Faye Robinson.

The first disc comprises Tippett songs which I am in no position to comment on as they are some of the few Tippett items I do not own and know. A situation I will most certainly remedy.

The second disc gives us A Child of our Time, probably Tippett's most popular and performed work. Ironically so in my opinion because this is representative of the earliest era of Tippett's career when arguably he had yet to find the utterly distinctive voice and commence the journey to the most refined individuality that would eventually ... This is a truly wonderful recording of the Christmas music of one of the greatest British classical composers of all time Ralph Vaughn Williams performed beautifully by The City Of London Sinfonia under the direction of one of my favourite conductors,Richard Hickox.
The soloists and the choir of The Joyful Company of Singers are magnificent. Sarah Fox (soprano) and Roderick Williams (baritone) sing their parts with great expression and feeling for the music. The clarity of this recording is outstanding - one can hear every word that is sung and every sensitive note that is played due to the marvellous balance of this recording.

Eddie Condon was born in Indiana and cut his jazz teeth in Chicago. In 1928 he moved to New York, where he participated in some classic sessions. The first two tracks tend not to be included in Molers' compilations, so it's good to have them here. Having got his toe in the door, Condon then began organising his own sessions, taking vocals on the first two, but then handing over to Jack Teagarden. The third session is the best-known, and both takes of the two tunes recorded are included.
