Another quality slice of post bop from legendary saxophonist Dave Liebman. This live set sees him with an Italian piano trio and they perform three Liebman originals plus a couple of standards. As you would expect from Liebman this is serious post bop jazz pushing and probing at the boundries of form and structure."G.I.G" is probably the most laid back of the five lengthy tracks with Liebman keeping it fairly melodic but progressive."Negative Space" gives his highly expressive soprano sax a workout with a lengthy solo full of intensity and at times freedom."Get me back to the apple" is a very freeish interplay piece with base and drums taking lengthy solos but didn't do much for me(the only down point of the album)."Poinciana" is more straight ... I first listened to this in a friends bedroom on vinyl - I laughed so hard that I got him to record it onto tape for me....i then proceeded to play chosen segments of this down my CB radio to annoy all!
A great sketch that lasts a whole album....I bought this and had to wait many weeks to get a copy from the USA - i wanted it that much I did not mind the wait...if you have not heard this and you remember the young ones, then this is just for you!

Wesla Whitfield (formerly Weslia Whitfield) is a cabaret singer of the Great American Songbook who has it all. Here in this 1991 CD, listeners share in a live performance, appreciating her wit, ability to kid around with her audience, and her frank opinions about songwriters, as she cheerfully chats with the lucky people who attended this performance. At the same time, they will appreciate her clear, strong voice, her perfect pitch, her phrasing, and a control rarely seen among singers who have the power to really belt out a song. Her interpretations of standards, ranging from Kurt Weill's "Here I'll Stay" and "Lost in the Stars, to Duke Ellington's "I Didn't Know About You," Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things," and George and Ira Gershwin's ... ok so it's not goth music how you imagine it but its certainly gothic in atmousphere and imagery. This is how I would describe the sound of the record anyway.
Brett anderson's lyrics started to contain lots of recurring images here and are often very funny when viewed as characature (the fags, rented cars, gasoline etc etc). However his use of familiar anderson-esqe imagery also serves to create a place of his own, like a postcard from a dark, dreamlike world. Its a very effective technique and draws some similarities with Tom Waits approach.
Much darker and more pretentious than 'Suede' you can kind of see why people dismissed it as indulgent, but why not be indulgent?. Ambitions are what makes music great and original. A truly ... Read More:

Since this album was released, indie music has only got worse. This album is better than anything Radiohead, Blur, Oasis, or The Arctic Monkey have ever, and will ever, make. There, I said it. And it feels good. This record is almost perfect, every song having an insightful message, a catchy chorus, and, perhaps most incredibly, a quotable line.
The highlight of the show is `We Are The Pigs', however. With an explosive riff reminiscent of The Smiths, Bowie and the Stones all rolled into one, the song struts through four minutes of vitriolic indie rock. With almost apocalyptic lyrics, the end of our society has never sounded cooler, with the chant-able chorus of `we are the stars of the firing line' almost a revolutionary soundbite.
