Ska was a Jamaican musical style that evolved from an amalgam of native Calypso and American R&B in the late 1950s/early 60s. It developed into Rocksteady, Reggae and a host of other variations since. We often overlook how influential these Jamaican styles have been on American and British music. In December, 2005, I took my teenage daughter to a Skafest in Chicago and was amazed at how a packed crowd of Goths, Punks, Emos, et al, responded enthusiastically to all these styles, including some pure Calypso that Harry Belafonte might have recorded back in the 50s!
It was Dekker who introduced Ska to the outside world. Fellow Jamaican Bob Marley became a bigger star, but Dekker was the trailblazer. He is the 'Desmond' referred ... Read More:

Each of these tracks are good covers, some funny, some seriously odd,but all good. But whoever put this together ruined it by putting either before or after the track a snippet of an interview with the fab four, which just should not be there.
I bought this so I could copy odd tracks onto compilations to play in my car,for my sole use,but am finding it impossible, nobody wants to hear a fairground organ playing " in my life" and then John talkin about his favourite choc ice.
This is basically a mishmash of interviews wedged between some good, unusual covers.Which is a shame because there are two more volumes and i,m not sure i,ll be rushing out to buy these.Back in the sixties they said that at their peak The Beatles could ... Read More:

I have to don my "hmmmmm" face for this review I'm afraid.
So, I suppose it's possible to have a "Mod Music" album without the Who or the Small Faces or The Faces, after all this is one such! But when you also leave out the Lambrettas, The Jam, Rod Stewart and Manfred Mann as well, you do start to wonder. The whole thing plays somewhat like a Madness/UB40/The Beat benefit in fact.
The inclusion of sixties rarities like "Rudi's in Love" by the Locomotive and "Seven Days Too Long" by Chuck Wood (incorrectly credited in the plural "Woods" on this one!) - a straight reggae pop song and a 70s Northern Soul classic respectively - just reinforce the idea that this collection was more about what the compiler could get, rather ... Brilliant CD for those of a certain age. Having owned most of these No. 1's from the 60's it was great to find them on a double CD.

I have lots of compilation CDs and this is one of the best. The sound quality and volume consistency are very good. I was afraid that some of the songs would be edited, but they managed to get everything full length as well.
Songs like John Lennon's "(Just Like) Starting Over" and Peter Gabriel's "Solisbury Hill" are near to impossible to find on various CDs like this. I had forgotten how good "No Milk Today" is, since it wasn't one of Herman's Hermit's biggest hits. And The Temptation's "Get Ready" is perfection. All and all very pleasing indeed.
