This was the first Doobie Brothers release to feature Mike MacDonald, who had previously done session work with Steely Dan. He had presumably been drafted in to replace Tom Johnston, who was going through difficult times in his private life. As such, the style of this album is radically different from its predecessors. MM brought some good-quality songs with him, and he also takes a lot of the singing duties.
Quite a good Doobies album, in spite of all the upheaval. There aren't any bad songs on the album, and there are even a few truly great ones. I knew a few Doobie Brothers songs before getting this CD out of curiosity. The tracks you may know - Listen to the Music, Long Train Running, What a Fool Believes - are the best ones. Of the others, there was nothing to grab me, no killer tracks. Sadly I think this is reasonable background music but it's all been done better by others. The Doobie Brothers are just too laid back for my liking.
